The Water Through My Fingers

So when I was young
I longed to be more old
Now at my age
I find myself between the two
The summers had this sense they'd
Never end up hollow in the woods
Today the weeks flow over the years
Like water through my fingers

Time is coming and time is going
Time flows like water through my fingers
Fact is, I'll live in the moment, then surround myself with joy
'Cause time flows like water through my fingers

Yeah, soon I'll be the age
My mother was when she had me
Then if I become a father I'll
Understand her point of view
She fled from her desires
And it was all because of me
Oh, time pools and then it's gone
Like water between my fingers

I'd never known that being adult
Would be so much pressure
I work like an animal
On a construction site
But with my two hands
I can support myself
--In this, I'm proud
Oh the time slips by and and then it goes
Like beer flows down my throat

Time is coming and time is going
Time slips like water through my fingers
So I'll live in this moment then surround myself with joy
'Cause time falls like water through my fingers

Stand There

Versions: #1
These kids are different
That's what the parents say
It's like they have no direction
I'd like to know who's raising them

They're different
They're different
Oh these kids here are different
I don't know where they belong
But surely not in my apartment

Awful music
Filth on the TV
What nice values they're being exposed to
They're different
Oh these kids are different
No like in the good ole' days
These kids here are different

Why you always stand there?
Why you always stare?
Why you always stand there
Like I ain’t even there?
Why you always stand there
With your stupid hair?
I don’t understand you
You don’t even care

Why you always stand there?
Why you always stare?
Why you always stand there
Like I ain’t even there?
Why you always stand there
With your stupid hair?
I don’t understand you
You don’t even care

Oh I don't understand parents
That's what the kids say
Working hard for a little cash
Just to spend it
To make it seem like they have it all

Company is coming
Clean up the apartment
Gotta keep up appearances
Get the soap

They're different
Oh they're different
Living so others think
They've got all that the kings had

Why you always stand there?
Why you always stare?
Why you always stand there
Like I ain’t even there?
Why you always stand there
With your stupid hair?
I don’t understand you
You don’t even care

Why you always stand there?
Why you always stare?
Why you always stand there
Like I ain’t even there?
Why you always stand there
With your stupid hair?
I don’t understand you
You don’t even care

Why you always stand there?
Why you always stare?
Why you always stand there
Like I ain’t even there
Why you always stand there
With your stupid hair?
I don’t understand you
You don’t even care

Why you always stand there?
Why you always stare?
Why you always stand there
Like I ain’t even there?
Why you always stand there
With your stupid hair?
I don’t understand you
You don’t even care

Moosehorn Lake

There's a camp deep in the woods,
It's one of my favourite places.1
No phone, or running water, or electricity.
Not everyone would like that
But for me it's true beauty.
I would love to be with my buddies
At Moosehorn Lake.

We bring all our instruments
And many cases of beer.
We're always cooking
Something on the old wood-burning stove.
Maxwell House boiling on the fire,
It's the best coffee.
I would love to be with my buddies
At Moosehorn Lake.
At Moosehorn Lake.

I moved in the heat wave,
Sun burning all the time.
But I've got no fear of working
To make my money.
When I work outside for 10 hours straight
In 40 degree weather,
I think of being with my buddies
At Moosehorn Lake.

I've been told to move to the city,
It'd be exciting.
Nah, I've got nothing against city folk,
But they're different.
If they made the trip,
They'd be able to appreciate
Being deep in the woods
At Moosehorn Lake.
At Moosehorn Lake.

Fifteen years from now,
I don't know what I'll be doing.
And if the camp is still there
It'll be run down.
Many of my greatest memories,
It's there that they were formed.
I'd love to be with my buddies
At Moosehorn Lake.

And 50 years from now
The camp will be in ruins2
Anything that remains
The forest will have eaten.
I hope that we'll be able to see it,
We can get to know each other again.
I would love to be with my buddies
At Moosehorn Lake.
At Moosehorn Lake.

  • 1. I don't know what 'y'in' means. I believe the overall meaning of the line should be pretty close regardless.
  • 2. I don't know what 'fera déboulée' means here. From some googling, this is my best guess.

Drivin On Empty

Does a worm ask itself the questions we ask ourselves?
Questions about life and the nature of existence
A worm doesn't care whether there's food in the belly
Does a worm ask itself the questions I ask myself?

When I ride in my car, I always feel good
The drivers that surround me are stressed about tomorrow
If all men had their own islands, me, I'd navigate the waves
When I ride in my car, I always feel good

Drivin' on empty
Four bald tires
Holes in my socks
Sometimes life is like that
Drivin' on empty
Four bald tires
Holes in my socks
Sometimes life is like that

I'm jealous of the life of animals
Pure liberty, they always live [by] the seconds
They don't know how to read, so they don't follow signs
I'm jealous of the life of animals

I love the feeling of the wind in my hair
I don't have lots of possessions, but I'm always happy
They might have gone bald, but at least I have four tires
I love the feeling of the wind in my hair

Drivin' on empty
Four bald tires
Holes in my socks
Sometimes life is like that
Drivin' on empty
Four bald tires
Holes in my socks
Sometimes life is like that

Drivin' on empty
Four bald tires
Holes in my socks
Sometimes life is like that
Drivin' on empty
Four bald tires
Holes in my socks
Sometimes life is like that

Drivin' on empty
Four bald tires
Holes in my socks
Sometimes life is like that
Drivin' on empty
Four bald tires
Holes in my socks
Sometimes life is like that

Income Tax

Another long year on the job
Papa Government has my money in his coffer
I usually do things last-minute
But not my income-tax checks! That, that excites me

Besides1, it's been a few2 weeks since I've gotten them3
I check my mailbox at least 4 times every day
Every day
Oh man what's this letter here that's just4 arrived

I just got my income tax return
Tonight the party never ends
I just got my income tax return
Tonight we gonna watch it burn
I just got my income tax return
Tonight the city never sleeps
I just got my income tax return
Tonight we gonna watch it burn

So then I take my phone and I call all my friends
I tell them that tonight we're partying until tomorrow
And don't5 worry about snacks or booze
Because my pockets are full and I'mma blow a fuse
I'm gonna blow friggin' $200 at Wal-Mart
(I'm gonna blow friggin' $200 at Wal-Mart)
I'm gonna blow friggin' $40 at Taco Bell
(I'm gonna blow friggin' $40 at Taco Bell)
I'm gonna fill my car up with friggin' supreme gas
(I'm gonna fill my car up with friggin' supreme gas)
I'm gonna blow friggin' $300 at the liquor store
(I'm gonna blow friggin' $300 at the liquor store)

I just got my income tax return
Tonight the party never ends
